MUSIC AND ITS HISTORY
ELIS
REGINA
Elis Regina Carvalho Costa was born in Porto Alegre,
in the Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa, on
March 17th 1945.
The first steps in her career occurred when she
was 11, right after she finished primary school.
She performed a song for the radio program Clube
do Gury, aired by Porto Alegre’s Farroupilha
Radio. Her presentation was so great that Ary Rego,
the program presenter, invited her to sing at the
radio on a regular basis.
Besides singing, the girl worked as a production
assistant. She read the listeners notes and introduced
new candidates. In 1964, Elis Regina, already living
in Rio de Janeiro, signed a contract with the TV
Rio, a local TV broadcaster. She would present the
program Noite de Gala with Wilson Simonal, Jorge
Ben and Marly Tavares.
To improve her budget, Elis started to sing in Rio
nightclubs and got known by important music producers.
Shortly after, she was required to record many famous
compositions by Brazilian great musicians.
