MUSIC AND ITS HISTORY
LUIZ
MELODIA
When Luiz Melodia was born, on January 7th 1951, his
parents Ms. Eurídice and Mr. Oswaldo believed
he would become a physician and leave the poor Morro
do Estácio, in Rio de Janeiro.
But Luiz Carlos dos Santos showed his turn for music
very early. Out of his parent’s sight, he used
to get his father’s guitar and play a few songs
by ear.
After graduating from highschool, Luiz quit studying.
Involved in the sixties Brazilian musical movements
Jovem Guarda and Bossa Nova, he started to compose
and play. The first to notice his talent was the poet
Wally Salomão, who used to visit Morro do Estácio
constantly. Actually Wally was the one who introduced
Luiz to Gal Costa. In 1972 Gal recorded one of the
most famous compositions by Luiz Melodia, Pérola
Negra.
In 1973, the music producer Torquato Neto invited
Luiz to record his first album. From that moment on
he chose to be called Luiz Melodia (Luiz Melody) as
a way to pay homage to his father.
