MUSIC AND ITS HISTORY
CHICO
BUARQUE
Not many people know this, but singer, songwriter
and writer Chico Buarque has also tried his hand at
acting.
In 1965 he recorded his first demo, and composed
for the play Morte e Vida Severina - based on João
Cabral de Mello Neto’s so-called masterpiece.
Back then he was also cast for Prisioneiro do Sonho,
soap opera stared by Eva Wilma and John Hebert.
Chico played the part of a young Bossa Nova singer.
Due to his success in the soap opera he was invited
to perform a concert in Campinas, SP. He was paid
thirty dollars that night. It was the first time he
made money singing!
In 1967, Chico acted in Garota de Ipanema with Nara
Leão, Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes,
huge names of Brazilian music. In the same year he
won third place in TV Globo’s Music Festival,
with the song Carolina.
